This year’s MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) will be used to honour late South African president, Nelson Mandela.

The 2015 awards scheme will honour the selfless South African leader, who led the country out of apartheid and died on December 5, 2013.

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Africa and MTV Base earlier this week announced the fifth edition of the awards scheme which honours excellence in music on the African continent.

Nominees for this year’s awards will be unveiled on 11 June, 2015 while the main awards ceremony will be held at the Durban International Convention Centre (ICC), KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa on Saturday, July 18, 2015.

The July 18 date event happens to coincide with Nelson Mandela’s birthday and the day is observed in South Africa as public holiday.

The 5th MTV MAMA is being held on the date to honour the late South African president, who was born on July 18, 1918. He would have turned 97 this year.

This year, MAMA 2015 will celebrate African talent across 17 award categories such as Best Male, Best Female, Best Song and Best New Act.

For the first time, the contributions of artists from Portuguese and French-speaking parts of Africa will also be recognised in the Best Lusophone and Best Francophone categories.

Nigerian musician Davido was adjudged Artiste of the Year at last year’s event while Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie won Best Hip Hop.
