New Insights Into The Ghanaian Contemporary Art Scene

Two Screening Events In Accra Put The Focus On The Artists' Perspectives
Art & Culture New Insights Into The Ghanaian Contemporary Art Scene
MAR 9, 2015 LISTEN

The research and documentation project "The Black Stars of Ghana – Art District" covering the contemporary visual art scene in Ghana will be finally screened in Ghana as well after it had been presented in Europe before.

"The Black Stars of Ghana – Art District", a project started in 2005 by Berlin-based Tanzanian curator and publisher Safia Dickersbach, intends to build an archive which encompasses all important and relevant contemporary visual artists working and based in Ghana. Major elements of "The Black Stars of Ghana – Art District" are conversations with the artists.

These conversations have been filmed and/or recorded and form a valuable source of insight into artistic life and art production in Ghana, as well as current developments in the country's cultural life. Experiences, comments and thoughts of the featured artists provide a fertile ground for further research, discourse and debate on the current status and the trajectory of the visual art scene in Ghana.

Two screening events will be held in Accra:
The short film “The State of the Art – The Ghanaian perspective" will be screened

on Wednesday, 11th March 2015, at 19:00 hrs. at the Goethe Institute Ghana, Address: 30, Kakramadu Road, next to NAFTI, P.M.B. 52 - Cantonments, Accra, Ghana.

The film “The State of the Art – The Ghanaian Perspective” summarizes statements and opinions of some of the project's participating artists in one compilation creating a spontaneous and diverse picture of the status of contemporary visual art in Ghana.

Details are also published on the Goethe Institute's website: http://www.goethe.de/ins/gh/de/acc/ver.cfm?fuseaction=events.detail&event_id=20488745

All eight film interviews with the current protagonists of the “The Black Stars of Ghana – Art District”, Prof. Ablade Glover, Wiz Kudowor, Kofi Setordji, Marigold Akufo-Addo, Larry Otoo, Gabriel Eklou, Kobina Nyarko and Kwadwo Ani, will be screened

on Friday, 13th March 2015, at 17:00 hrs. at the Nubuke Foundation, Address: 7 Adamafio Close, East Legon, Accra, Ghana, https://www.facebook.com/events/1568416103408331

The conversations with these artists document the work, experiences and inspirations of a representative cross-section of contemporary visual artists in Ghana from a personal Ghanaian viewpoint. This new angle in researching and documenting contemporary art from an African perspective replaces the widely accepted practice of having European art historians, critics and art curators determine the narrative of contemporary art from Africa by assessing and evaluating it through a Eurocentric lens. „The Black Stars of Ghana – Art District“ provides a forum for the artists to tell the audience their personal stories and to recount the narrative of Ghanaian contemporary art from a Ghanaian perspective.
