What Ghanaian Musicians Must Know About Organising Shows

29.01.2015 LISTEN
By Afia English

In the past,event organisers staged shows and they chose to either pay or not pay the musicians billed to perform.This unfairness did not go well with most Ghanaian musicians.

With time,musicians realised they need to take advantage of their popularity to organise their own shows.You can talk of concerts like Bbnlive show,Rapperholic, Kojo Antwi shows, Saminifest, Becca's Girls Talk,the versatile show, just to mention few.

It seems it is becoming a norm now.Almost every artist in Ghana is trying to stage a show but unfortunately these shows are not getting the attention they need .They probably need to know these;

First of all,certain artistes who are not at the peak of their career have also started organising shows.As a musician,before you stage a show, you should be sure you have a larger fanbase,70% of the populace should be ready to pay and attend.You need a fan base that cut across most of the regions musically.

Complacency on the part of some musicians,with regards to the promotion of their concerts in various cities other than Accra. If it is Accra,they hype it well,but with the other cities in other regions, publicity is always low because they just assume that if they are popular in Accra, they are known nationwide.

We have instances where shows do not sell well because of low publicity in the host regions.Accra is obviously not Ghana.Even if you have nationwide recognition invest into good publicity. Sarkodie's Rapperholic concert in Koforidua two years ago faced this challenge.

You need to be a good performer by all standards to stage a show.If you don't have the energy to perform and also pull the audience,do not try.

Any artiste's ability to wow the crowd is paramount . The number of hit songs you have also counts. If your song does not have a commercial appeal,there is no way people are going to come from their house to patronise your concert.

In some cases people stage shows and other artistes who comes as guest performers outshine them..When it happens that way,cooperate bodies supporting the event will loose interest in investing.

A good sound system coupled with light and attractive stage set up should be considered. In addition, the image of the event is of much concern..Public relation in Ghana is always one way..Radio and tv commercial that's all.

Event organisers should stop taking us for granted and fellow Publicists should stop taking the job for granted.

There is more to it; The public relation team is the eye of the event.Hire a good press team to carry out accurate information's about the event. We have instances where people think 'Write up for events on the social media is ultimate ..It goes beyond that.It is a technical work that needs the right team to carry it out.This must be done well to raise the interest of participants and also let the sponsors have the value of the inputs...

I could continue but in all what I am trying to put across is simple,event is a big thing and must be taken seriously ..It is beyond music and dance.

Make sure you have;

1. A good fan base

2.A good stage craft

3.Hit songs

4. A good technical PR team
