London, December 22 2014 - Band Aid 30's charity single 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' reinforced what many argue as a negative stereotype of the African continent. However, for all its sins, the song and the narratives it peddled, are just symptoms of a bigger problem - 'The White Saviour Industrial Complex.'

In the January edition of New African Magazine, the cover story takes you inside the 'The White Saviour Industrial Complex'. This issue challenges Band Aid 30 and then in a 20 page analysis, argues through a number of critiques and reflexions how Africans are already pushing back against this broader Complex: its politics, economics, development agendas, ideology, psychology and stereotypes.

Editorial Director James Schneider comments, "The purpose of this cover story is by no means to attack those who are not of the continent. Many non-Africans do excellent work on the continent, as do many Africans outside the continent. Rather, we want to point out the privilege and power dynamics that underlie the Complex to emancipate from it and forge a new relationship.”

Alongside the cover story articles on 'The White Saviour Industrial Complex' the January issue of New African also contains its consistent mix of current affairs, features and special reports. Highlights include:

South Africa's apartheid Killers – This January, the South African government will have to decide whether or not to award parole to a handful of apartheid era murderers.

Burkina Faso's Revolution - New African takes a deeper look inside the revolution that ended 27 years of rule by Blaise Compaore in Bukina Faso.

Ebola Survivors – In a special report, New African hears from front line health workers and Ebola survivors in Liberia as they take on the virus.

How to defeat Boko Haram - Following the increase in Boko Haram violence in 2014, the situation in parts of North East Nigeria can seem desperate. New African looks ahead at the key strategies that could be employed in 2015.

Africa Cup of Nations 2015 – In an 8 page preview, New African profiles the teams, players and groups in the lead up to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which takes place this January in Equatorial Guinea.

In what promises to be a dynamic issue, Acting Editor for New African Magazine, reGina Jane Jere, states "This issues starts 2015 as we mean to go on. Pushing back and moving forward”
