Grace Omaboe Maame Dorkono Cries Out For Roles In MoviesTVs—I Want To Continue Acting

Ms. Grace Omaboe, the highly acclaimed Ghanaian artiste says she is bored. The boredom of this lady (also known as Mami Dorkono being her stage name) emanates from her not participating in movie and television productions In Ghana and the sub region.

She is indeed multi talented for once hosting her own radio and television series and also veering into politics for a while. Speaking recently to the host of 'Capital Television Flex Entrainment' she said 'It's not for crave and love for money that I wish to be active in acting on movies and television productions. 'I just love acting and therefore wish to continue to contribute my quota through acting'.

She said she was ready to perform for reasonable fees saying that she is comfortably affluent enough to be able to support herself for the time being as she gets support from her children who provide her the needed cash regularly.

She is full of praise to God for the ability to establish a school from which she gets reasonable income. 'I just want to be active in movies being passionate about acting'. Members of the panel all of whom are film and television production gurus agreed with Grace Omaboe and called for support for ageing artistes.

However they advised her and men and women like her to be proactive by looking out for a role to play in the movie and television industry. She and others need to look for agents to scout for vacancies for them grace omaboe was singled out by one of the panelists with concurrence from his colleagues, for her brilliance in her speech diction and languages (English and the vernaculars).

They also lamented the unfortunate situation where very little or nothing is being done for our ageing artistes who are not given roles to play but get younger men and women to play the roles of old men and women after being turned old through make ups. It came out that she was not alone in her predicament.

Others like grace nortey and Mac Jordan Amarteifio are scarcely heard of or seen in movies and television production. Grace Nortey is used sometimes but not Mc Jordan one of the finest kings of 'comic reliefs' in television production and movies. He is said to have been amputated due to ill health.

The situation looks bad but not insurmountable. There is the need for the 'actors' guild', MUSIGA and television and radio stations using the services of artistes to set up a fund to cater for artistes. The fund can be crafted into insurance cover for parts of the artistes' incomes be deducted at source and kept away for them. This is a viable scheme that should be of interest to Ghana's insurance organizations and the private ones.

For some years now we have had a lot of artistes within the music movie and radio fraternities such as Super OD, Kwame Ampadu and Kwaw Ansah Agya Ko Nimo and many more who are our star performers. They are not getting any younger and need to settle comfortably.

Unlike old footballers who are being catered for somehow by government what plan do we have for these artistes who have been responsible for the happiness that resonate from their roles on our radios, television sets and movie halls? The nation should not abandon them to their fates but work out a program with their organizations to continue using them in movies and television sets and get them insured to save for a rainy day. They must also be rewarded financially and monumentally as dome to footballers. This way we as a nation would be solving the problem of boredom and financial and emotional problems of our experienced artistes.
