Bizung School Of Music & Dance Opens Village Library In Tamale

The Bizung School of Music and Dance opens a village library with the support of the Mali Fala Fund

TAMALE, GHANA April 11 – Mohammed Alidu of the Bizung School of Music and Dance and Jane Drew of the Mali Fala Fund are delighted to announce the opening of a village library at the Bizung School of Music and Dance in Jisonayili (Tamale, Ghana). To commemorate this occasion, there will be an opening ceremony and reception on Thursday, April 17 at 15.00. All are invited.


The Bizung School of Music and Dance is an endeavor by the Playing For Change Foundation (PFCF) and Tamale native, Mohammed Alidu, to provide students in the Northern region the opportunity to learn about their unique cultural heritage through music education and develop their artistic talents in the process. The Bizung School is the only tuition-free Music School in the Northern Region.

Instruction is offered in traditional drumming and dance, xylophone, gonje as well as music theory, guitar, bass, drum kit and piano. There is also a music studio open to the community and funded by the Ghana Denmark Cultural Fund that provides instruction in studio recording techniques as well as live sound engineering.

The Mali Fala Fund assists village schools across West Africa to further educate their children by providing them with a library. Each library will be furnished with books and the means to watch educational videos and DVDs. http://malifalafund.org/

Mohammed Alidu, the Founder and Director of the Bizung School is a Tamale native and son of the late Lung Naa Alidu Mumuni. This family hails from the Bizung lineage of Talking Drum Chiefs. Alidu has traveled the world playing his drum with musicians as diverse as his travels including Peter Gabriel, Baaba Maal, Michael Franti and Ziggy Marley and performed at international festivals, a presidential inauguration, even Buckingham Palace for the Queen of England. Alidu has played on every continent except Antarctica and in addition to having his own band is also a founding member of the global music collective, Playing for Change.

Alidu's unique approach to music as an ever-evolving journey has made him a sought after teacher, musician and collaborator. He has held positions as principal drummer in the Ghana Dance Ensemble and Adzido, the largest pan-African dance company in Europe, spent a year in Madagascar collaborating with local artists like the brilliant, Dede and most recently as an instructor at the University of Colorado in USA.
