New Ghanaian act, Ginger, may not be a household name in Ghanaian music circles yet, but his brand of music and unique style is fast gaining him grounds across the Atlantic.
His single, 'Muhammed', an unconventional fusion of hiphop/RnB and Islamic melodies, has received heavy rotation and glowing reviews on major international platforms such as the B.B.C, Voice of America, Community Radio 'Zumunta' America and many other in America and the United Kingdom.
Despite the mileage his single is giving him, little is known of the Ghanaian based artiste here in GH.
Mohammed Taufik Abbas, known in music circles as'Ginger' is no stranger on the local music circuit. Growing up however, he toyed with the idea of becoming a journalist like his dad, Iddriss Abbas who worked with BBC's American bureau.
Eventually, he would choose music and thus begun his entry unto the music scene right through his senior high school days representing in inter-school music competitions.
In the year 2000, he formed a group with his cousin 'Pras' and later joined by 'Bala Bamba' and 'Flavour' of blessed memory. The group was christened, AKWANTUFUO, and released their debut LP tagged, 'Palm Wine' in 2001.
Ginger went a long hiatus from the music business, travelling to Senegal to study the Holy Quran and the history of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W). According to him, this exposed to him the real importance of music, culture and languages; and inspired him to start singing along with his rap talents. He also moved into writing music that promote Islamic values but kept his versatility alive and still makes music with azonto sounds, hip-hop and afro-pop. .
After 5years in Senegal he came back to Ghana and released his first single titled 'Muhammad' complimented with an impressive music video; both of which are now gaining major recognition on international broadcast network.
Like many other acts of his generation.'Ginger' aims at major success beyond the shores of Ghana and dreams of winning a BET Award, KORA Awards and a host of international awards in the near future.
This may well happen sooner that the young man expects with the level of acceptance he seems to be enjoying internationally; Local networks should however take notice as well.
