Organizers of the maiden African Global DJ Awards, Stronghold Entertainment and Statsmedia Group, say the awards has been instituted to recognize and celebrate the significant role Africa DJs play when it comes to entertainment on the continent.

The maiden edition of the awards which comes off on May 4, 2013 at the Sandton Convention Center, Johannesburg, South Africa will award some of Africa's finest DJs.

Speaking in an interview view with Myjoyonline.com, Mohammed Alfa and Tope Esan, of Stronghold Entertainment and Statsmedia Group respectively, said the awards will highlight the importance of the DJ profession in the continent.

According to Tope Esan, they have “been looking at this award for the last three years now to really celebrate African DJs. If you look at all the awards in the market now there is no award that is specific to DJs only” so they decided to come up with a global event “to celebrate DJs” considering the significant role they play.

Top African DJs, entertainment executives, radio stations and club owners came up with the categories as well as compiled the final nomination list which has been grouped into 16 categories.

The awards, Mohammed Alfa noted, is a scheme that Africans should own and that “it is not a popularity contest, it is about credibility.”

The awards night, he added, will be an event-based DJs and patrons will witness some of Africa's biggest DJs and acts performing at the event.

DJ Black, host of Open House Party on Joy 99.7 FM, has been nominated in three categories - Best Western African DJ, Best Radio DJ and African DJ of the Year - for the awards.

For the African DJ of the Year category, he will face stiff competition from DJ Aly and Fila (Egypt), DJ Fresh (South Africa), DJ Xclusive (Nigeria), DJ Crème de la crème (Kenya) and DJ Oskido (South Africa).

Voting for the awards, which can be done via Twitter – @agdaawards - and the event's website – www.agda.co.za - organizers said started on March 15, 2013 and winners will be announced at the main event in South Africa.
