Hip life musician, Castro D'Destroyer known in real life as Theophilus Tagoe has reacted to assertions that he owns the success of his hit track, African Girls to Black Stars striker, Asamoah Gyan.

Castro speaking in an exclusive interview with Myjoyonline.com in Kumasi over the weekend said the success and popularity of the song was not because he featured the football star but rather, the song has attained this huge popularity because it is a good song.

“Asamoah Gyan is a star. Castro is a star but I think what is keeping this song going is the quality of the song… not because Castro is already a star or Asamoah Gyan is already a star.”

Castro released his first, Damages, second, Tofee, and third, Comm Centre albums which shot him to fame and musical success but his fourth, Fakye (Forgive) turned out a dampener and plunged him into silence. Many even suspected it was the end of the road for him.

His silence, he said, was strategic but not due to perceptions that it was the end of his musical career. “People think that maybe Castro is done with his music career but I always tell my fans that they should wait for my next album before if they have something to say [they say it].

“After Concentrate, I went quiet for a while trying to bring out good music to my fans and at the end of the day, you can see how this album is moving. This means God has done a lot for my life. It is all about good music, good lyrics and the best planned album,” he explained.

Castro revealed that this is not the first time Asamoah Gyan is trying his hands at music and that the two of them go way back in music before he, Asamoah, even started playing football.

“Asamoah Gyan is a brother from another mother. We started way back and that is one thing people don't know that Asamoah Gyan was once a musician before he started playing football.

“So I didn't feature him because he is Asamoah Gyan. I featured him because he has the talent and you can see that he proved everybody wrong. What people didn't know he could do, at the end of the day, he is doing it and everywhere we go or every where people hear our song, they go crazy about Asamoah Gyan's part,” he said.

He said the popular African Girls hit was co-written by Asamoah Gyan and himself, adding Asamoah Gyan also appears on three other tracks on the album.

The 15-track album, Back to the Sender, was launched in Kumasi on October 10 and it features artistes like Guru, Sarkodie, Osei Tutu and Tinny.

In another development, Castro confirmed that he did date songstress, Mzbel some years ago and that they dated for two years.

Although he did not confirm the exact date of the relationship, he hinted it took place during the time he featured on Mzbel's 16 Years, Yopoo and E dey B tracks around 2006.

“Yes its true…we dated for two years,” he answered when Myjoyonline.com put that question to him.

Castro added that they decided to go their separate ways because, “it got to a time, the relationship was not working so we decided to go separate ways.”
