I Stole No Car -Reggie Rockstone

03.03.2005 LISTEN

Reggie Rockstone may be a very angry man. With a court case hanging over his head, the forty-something year old hiplife music innovator has shut himself up.

He would not speak with anyone about why he appeared in an Accra circuit court two weeks ago on a charge of selling a car that belonged to a family friend....except with his lawyer and his microphone.

Indeed the media are the last people that Reggie, usually a pal of the media, would want to be buddy-buddy with now. Perhaps Reggie's unusual mood is for a good reason. In his latest single, recorded specially to express his anger at the media which he refers to as “Konkonsa” people,Reggie lashes out strongly against newspapers who he claims, have been going to town with news that he had stolen a car.

“They say,Reggie has stolen a car. That's wicked; they are trying to defame Reggie,” he sings.“All I wanted to do was to make good music for my people.I am not guilty. “Daddy Ricci, see what they are trying to do to your own son, Reggie.”

“Never stole nothing; never will steal anything.Shame on all of you who judge Reggie Rockstone without the facts. They smile at your face; tomorrow they will frown. I say I'm not guilty! I'm not guilty! I'm not guilty!,” the song goes.

Reggie's song, which has been played occasionally on radio in the capital makes only a short reference to the court case in which he pleaded not guilty to a charge of stealing and was granted bail in the sum of ¢300 million with three sureties.

According to a court report carried by the Daily Graphic, Reggie was said to have sold a Land Rover Discovery belonging to a family friend that was under the care of his late father in Accra.

Presenting the facts of the case to the court, presided over by Mr N.K Osam,Chief Inspector Benedicta Akologo, said the complainant,Peggy Martey Korley, a Ghanaian based in the United Kingdom,is a family friend to the accused.

C/Inspector Akologo said Peggy owned a Land Rover Discovery with registration number GT 171 C,which was under the care of Reggie's late father.

She said in 2001, when his father passed away, she came down to attend the funeral. During her visit, she informed the accused to take good care of the car while she returned to the UK.

Inspector Akologo said the complainant took all the necessary documents along with her. However, while in the UK she had the information that Reggie had sold the vehicle without her consent.

The prosecutor said based on that information,Peggy decided to come down and find out the truth for herself and when Reggie was asked to hand over the car,he failed to do so but instead told her he had sold the car since he thought it was some of his late father's properties that he inherited.

The complainant therefore decided to report the incident to the police and Reggie was arrested. In his statement to the police,Reggie admitted selling the car but could not recall who he sold the car to and the amount he received in return.
