Unlike Ayo Makun's AY Live Easter show and Tuface Idibia's fifth album launch tagged: Buckwyld and Breathless, the recently held The African Kings of Comedy show organized by comedian and Glo ambassador, Basketmouth, was poorly attended with empty seats visible in the large hall.
Low turn out of anticipated crowd nearly marred the show, which held at the upscale Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Saturday, May 26.
EE's reporter who was at the show revealed that the venue was hall filled with empty seats conspicuous in most part of the hall.
Even visibly disappointed Basketmouth, kept ordering that the main flood lights in the hall should be put off in order to conceal the scantiness of the show, which featured him alongside I go dye, Okey Bakassi, Bovi, Akpororo and several other leading musicians.
An insider who spoke with EE on the condition of anonymity disclosed that dreadlocks-donning Basketmouth over rated himself by deliberately refusing to do what was expected of him ahead of the D-Day.
“For instance, he pegged a table at the show for one million Naira, VIP, 30K and 10k, for regular. Where on earth does he expect a struggling young man in these hard times to cough out 10k, for a show? Even the prices for the table and VIP sections were outrageous.
Another challenge that marred the success of the show was inadequate publicity. Basket and his team totally neglected this aspect. Publicity is the key in showbiz, but Basket felt he has arrived and therefore does not need the media to help sell his show. And the end result was the near empty hall that was witnessed. It was a good show that was bungled by self inflicted ego.”
“When I passed through Eko Hotel that night, the whole place was calm, there was no traffic like we usually witnessed whenever AY, Tuface and other entertainers in the calibre of Basketmouth are organizing shows. Imagine, a Basketmouth's show going on unnoticed in
Lagos on a busy weekend, something is wrong somewhere and Basket should watch it,” stated another shocked fan.
