If you are just starting a move to a new home, you are likely very busy with a ton of stuff. There is a ton of packing, research on hiring the right company to execute the move and many other tasks that await your attention.

It is not easy to organise it all, but at least you have a clear goal: your new home is there and soon enough you will be there. The more you focus on the tasks at hand, the sooner you will be able to finally move in. There are some things about your new home that you need to prepare. Before you actually move there, you will do well to pay attention to certain things that require your attention, such as domestic cleaning. Ignoring such task will lead to trouble later on. Here is what you need to consider:

  • Have a talk with the previous owner - before they move on after you conclude the deal, be sure to question the previous owner about anything you view as important. This includes asking for the manuals of all appliances, questions about the TV service and additional media hookups, what the exact paint colour of the walls is before you delve into the difficult task of renovations and home cleaning. Also be sure to ask them about the neighborhood and possible stores and shops you are going to need. The last thing you want is to have to stop work because you lack certain supplies.
  • Take your time to inform other parties of the move - this is a time-consuming task that is very important. Never ignore it and make sure you devote enough effort to inform important parties and institutions of your move. Such include, but are not limited to: banks, newspaper and magazine subscriptions, utility companies, employers and health care providers.

  • Inspect the space before moving day - you need to have peace of mind that the place is properly prepared for the arrival of your belongings. Soon enough there will be a ton of moving boxes and items that you will need to arrange all around your new home. To ensure that it can take the load, you should inspect the closet spaces and other storage locations. Make sure there are no problems with the utilities and heating of your new home. Inspect the basement and attic for potential issues and make sure you invest some time in home cleaning for these areas.

  • Change the locks and install security system - in order to have complete peace of mind that you and your belongings are safe, you should install the appropriate security measures. Changing the lock is one of the easiest improvements you can make in that regard. The previous owners, realtors and tenants have probably had keys to the property at some point in time, so it's a good idea to at least get a new set of locks.

Doing all of this before you actually move in will ensure that you have an easier time in the process of settling in.
