He Calms Storms

Key verse: “But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!” ( Matthew 8:27 ).

Men easily choose companions usually on the basis of those who can encourage and comfort them in difficult times. Unfortunately, this affects only transient matters. The more fundamental need of the grace to navigate the often dangerous and uncertain terrain in the journey of life is usually ignored.

The journey with Jesus across the sea became hazardous midstream because of the great tempest that arose. Lives became threatened, and the disciples fearing the worst, cried out to Jesus for help. He rebuked the storm and the sea, and calm was restored. When Jesus and His disciples got to the other side of the country of the Gergesenes, Jesus came across two people that were possessed of evil spirits. They were violent and no man could bind them. Again, Jesus rebuked the evil spirits and they departed at His word. Quite clearly then, Jesus has power over the whole creation, including evil spirits and the elements of nature.

Anyone passing through the sea of this world to the other side of heaven should expect storms, difficulties, fears and terrible trials. The disciples prayed to Him, “Lord save us”. It was good they had the Master of the storm as their Lord who was also abiding with them. We also can call on Jesus in our distress and peril, provided we have Him as our Lord and that He abides with us.

Those who are willing to go anywhere with Jesus will find Him a Saviour for all seasons. Jesus slept in the storm; we too can rest with Him whatever betides, knowing that we cannot perish in His presence. And if you allow Him, He will calm all the storms of your life.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Never go through life alone; have Jesus in your life's boat.
