The need to hire domestic servants for house chores, such as cleaning the house, cooking food, taking care of the children and others has risen as more women started working to make money and add to the family income.

In other words, the need to hire housemaids increased as a result of circumstances.

The practice of hiring housemaids or domestic staff is very rampant in Nigeria.

In the days of old, women hardly worked. They were mostly housewives who stayed home to cater to the needs of their families while the husband was solely responsible for providing for the family.

But these days, the reverse is the case as both men and women now share the responsibility of providing for the family.

When the husband and wife are both working, someone would have to take care of the children, therefore the need for a maid arises.

Some people are against hiring of house servants saying a hardworking woman needs no help in the home, while some others have said there is nothing wrong in it.

The rise in the number of cases of child abuse committed by housemaids has raised a significant question about the dangers of handing out the care of your children to housemaids.

Many maids have been known to commit atrocities. Some have even taken over the husbands of their madams.

Some weeks back, a video went viral, showing a maid seriously maltreating a little girl . She beat the child, flung the child and even stepped on her.

Quite recently, there was another case of a maid in Lagos who kidnapped her employer's two sons and according to report, she was gotten from an online sales portal, OLX.

Some are of the opinion that if you treat your maid right, he or she will treat your child right but there are some maids who, no matter how good you are to them, they will still maltreat your children.

Some have said instead of hiring a random person, hire your relative but some relatives are worse than the maids.

Due to circumstances beyond control, some people cannot do without maids but before you employ that maid, think wisely and make the right choice.

Before employing anyone into your home, you should carry out thorough investigations. If possible ask for references.

If you can, find out where the person lives, the person's family and every little information you can get.

Getting a housemaid doesn't mean you should leave them with the responsibility of training your children for you.

It is not the duty of a housemaid to take care of your children. Many children have been sexually abused, physically abused and given wrong training because they were left in the care of house servants.

No matter how busy or tight your schedule is, you should make out time for your children. If you pay attention, you'd sure notice when your children are being maltreated.
