Family & Parenting New Parents Should Not Sleep With Their 0-4 Month Old Babies – Doctors
AUG 17, 2014 LISTEN

A new study published in the Pedriatics journal on Monday has come out with a stunning claim that suggests kids younger than 4-months-old are more liable to die when sleeping with their parents.

The findings were based off data collected between 2004 and 2012, in which 8,207 child deaths occurred. The report states that young babies are in danger of rolling into objects in the sleep area, such as blanket or pillow. The findings defined “bed-sharing” as “the infant sleeping on the same surface with a person or animal” and claimed that out of the over 8,000 casualties, 70% where sharing their beds. Pediatrician Rachel Moon, M.D said:  “Bed-sharing for 0-4 month old babies is extremely risky and although we always recommend that the infant's sleep area be clear of pillows, blankets, bumper pads, etc., many parents forget the importance of this message as the baby gets older,”  Moon said.  “However, these items are equally dangerous as the baby becomes more mobile.” They also said that young kids from the age of 4 months and 1 year also risk the same issue and could roll into objects in their deep sleep. For years now the American Academy of Pediatrics has given credible guidelines for how babies should be put to bed and have said babies have to sleep in the same room with the parents, but not on the same bed and the baby's bed has to have a firm surface.

They have always recommended that any soft objects and loose bedding has to be taken away from the bed until the baby is at least a year old. Assistant professor of pediatrics and internal medicine at St. Louis University's School of Medicine, Shalini Paruthi, M.D said:  “We really need to educate parents before their baby arrives, and remind them of the things we know can save lives, like putting them to bed in their own sleeping space.” Another pediatrician William Sears, M.D has argued the recent reports and said that co-sleeping has been practiced throughout mankind's history and babies sleep more peacefully why they co sleep. But Moon, however, believes that with the recent research the risk of infant death is high and she wouldn't risk her child's safety co sleeping. The research was published in the Monday edition of journal Pediatrics and made by the National Center for the Review and Prevention of Child Deaths Case Reporting System.
