An Artisan

23.03.2014 LISTEN
By Douglas Kwabena Yeboah, University Of Calgary, Canada

An Artisan Once Said:
"I was always made to feel like I'd be successful because I always did my homework. I wish I'd spent more time putting energy into things that came from me."

I THINK THIS COULD BE DEBATABLE:
1. To #SUPPORT what he said, I think that's exactly the problem with the way our school system is geared! It's trying to make everyone do the same things the way someone else said, rather than learning to recognize, leverage, and balance their unique traits. It's more focused on busy work and teaching to test, and less focused on the hopes, dreams, and aspirations of our youth. We DO continue to learn as we move through life. But, it's a different kind of education than the classroom provides—a "hands-on," experiential learning (which, in my opinion I call "doing").

2. In #CONTRAST, from my own conceit, everyone's path is different, even if we are intelligent and work hard. School is where we learn. Life is where we do. SCHOOL=LIFE. School should be about learning skills, but instead, it's about learning facts. The facts can be picked up along the way, depending on out interests, but skills are what's required. The problem is that skills are difficult to assess, so schools focus on fact acquisition because they can measure it. If you had done the opposite you probably would be saying the reverse. It's not an easy balance to strike.
