She Says I'm Too Old For Her

Dear Nana Ama,
I am 38 and she is a 24-year-old student. When I first proposed love to her she rejected my proposal because of her education.

However, in the course of time, she faced accommodation problems and approached me for assistance. I agreed to share my room and bed with her and for the past six months we have been living together without any sexual relations.

I feed her and do my best to make her happy but anytime I talk to her about love, she snobs me with the excuse that I am too old.

Meanwhile, she maintains she has no boyfriend but whenever she goes out she returns very late and tells all sorts of stories.

I have no other girl in mind apart from her. What should I do? Do you think she loves me?

Fred, Accra.
Dear Fred,
It will be good to have a heart-to-heart chat with the girl and let her know how you feel. You must make her understand that you deeply love her. If she still insists you are too old for her, then it means she is not interested in you as she has said but only came to you because she was in difficulty.

You must realise that living together with her creates an impression that you are in a relationship and if anything goes wrong you may be held responsible.

It will, therefore, be in your interest to get her family or any relative around to know that the girl is living with you because she was hard up and needed somewhere to stay. This will protect you just in case anything happens to her while she is living with you.

However, if she insists on going out and returning late at night, you may have to talk to her to put a stop to her late night outings. If she refuses to listen to you, then you may have to decide whether you want to continue to be a Good Samaritan or let her find an alternative place to live.
