NDC Youth Shut Down Nabdam District Offices
03.07.2015 LISTEN

Some angry youth believed to be members and supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Nabdam District of the Upper East Region, closed down the offices of the District Assembly in the early hours of Thursday, July 2, in protest against government's failed promise to create jobs for them.

According to DAILY GUIDE source, the youth claim they had complained and reminded the Nabdam District Chief Executive, Vivian Anafo; the Regional NDC chairman, Alhaji Bolnaba and the Upper East Regional minister, James Zuugah Tiigah severally about the government's promise to create jobs for them, and despite these complaints and reminders, nothing seemed to be happening in the area in respect of job creation.

What provoked the youth to shut the District Assembly's offices, this paper learned, was the appointment of someone outside the Nabdam district as the new district coordinator of the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA).

The youth did not understand why the applications of equally competent and capable people in the district were ignored and someone from another district, who they claim knows very little about the Nabdam district, was rather appointed.

Their action came just two days after the Vice President, Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, had visited Tongo and the Talensi districts and reiterated that government was willing and committed to job creation across the country to help improve the livelihoods of the youth in Ghana.

The current situation in the Nabdam district – over the appointment of someone from Bongo to head Nabdam GYEEDA – will come to many as a surprise and abnormal. But then, it could also be taken as the expression of the frustration of the youth in that district, especially the NDC youth, in the face of the general hardship across the country.

DAILY GUIDE checks revealed that the District Chief Executive, Madam Vivian Anafo, was out of the district when her office and other offices of the assembly were sealed off by the youth.
