Talensi by-election: CPP, PNC field one candidate

The Convention People's Party (CPP) and the People's National Convention (PNC) have launched a joint campaign aimed at annexing the parliamentary seat for the PNC in the July 7 by-election in the Talensi constituency.

The launch took place at Yameriga, hometown of the PNC's candidate, Dr. Michael Wombeogo Namalteng.

Addressing supporters of both parties, CPP national chairperson, Samia Nkrumah said the joint campaign does not only reaffirm the unification efforts of the Nkrumahist parties, but it also heralds the return of Ghana's first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and his vision for Ghana.

'The CPP and the PNC are one,' said Nkrumah, whose party is not fielding a candidate for the by-election. 'We are here and will continue to be here. We'll be coming and going till the day of the election, 7th July. The people of Talensi must make history and vote for the comeback of Kwame Nkrumah.'

She added: 'And this is a wonderful opportunity for us to show that we are one family. We are one party with the same aspiration, the same vision for the people of Ghana. The best we can do is to make sure that the people of Talensi here vote for Dr. Michael, that the people of Talensi make sure that one more Nkrumahist MP enters parliament to serve them. And I know that he is going to be honest. I know that he will use the Common Fund wisely. People will see the difference― the difference between other MPs and the Nkrumahist MP.'

Dr Namalteng, who is contesting for the seat for the third time, said he is optimistic this time around because there is a deafening chorus from all over the area that this is his time.

'Nkrumah said there is always a new wind of change blowing and this is the time that you and I, our generation must see that new wind of change. The people of Talensi told me 'give way for your elders' and I did. The people of Talensi are telling me 'this is your time we are sending you to parliament' and I believe them. Loss is not in our dictionary at this time. This is an opportunity. It is my time. The rest are also in the queue, just as I stood in the queue,' Dr. Namalteng said.

He polled 4,394 votes representing 20.38% in the 2008 general elections. In 2012, he obtained 6,420 votes, representing 23.39%. He finished third in both instances behind John Tia of the National Democratic Congress who retained the seat in 2008 and Robert Nachinab Doameng Mosore, who captured the seat for the New Patriotic Party in 2012 but resigned after being elevated as a paramount chief.
