NDC youth urged to defend achievements of the party

Koforidua, May 25, GNA - The Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Antwi-Boasiako Sekyere has urged the youth of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to defend the success chalked out by the government.

He said, in the political history of the country, it is only the social democratic parties that takes the interest of the vast majority of the people serious and put in place projects that take care of the present and the future development of the country.

Mr Antwi-Boasiako was speaking at a symposium organised by the Koforidua Polytechnic Chapter of the Tertiary Education Institutional Network (TEIN) of the NDC in Koforidua.

The Regional Minister challenged the members of TEIN to demonstrate their commitment to the victory of NDC in the 2016 elections by going to their communities when they break from school to engage the people in their homes, farms and work places to tell them the success story of the government of President John Dramani Mahama.

Mr Kofi Adams, the National Organiser of the party said, NDC is not a political party that toys with the mandate of the people and take every issue that affect majority of the people of Ghana very serious.

He said some few years ago, it was normal to see people all over Greater Accra moving about with gallons in search of water and on assumption of office, President Mahama promised to fix the problem and true to his words, now many communities in Greater Accra Region, including Adenta, Teshie, Nungua and Labadi and surrounding communities now have potable water.

He said from 2000 and 2008, no new public tertiary institution or regional and hospital was constructed in the country and it was after 2008 that the NDC government provided two public universities, one in Volta Region and another in Brong- Ahafo and now a new public university is being constructed in Eastern Region .

He explained that President Mahama sees corruption as mass murder hence his government decision to review the anti-corruption law and set up structures to make it easier for people to make complains against public officials suspected to be corrupt for action to be taken against them.

Mr Adams said, the President has also publicly stated that, he would not shield any of his appointees that a case is brought against and had demonstrated it by having his own appointees send to the courts on corruption charges.

He said the action and inactions of the President on corruption charges are there to be compared to what was done under other regimes and the pronouncements made by other presidents on corruption for comparism for the public to make their judgment.

He said, as far back as 1997, a study had indicated that, Ghana could no longer depend on hydro-energy as its main source of power, hence the construction of the first thermal plants.

However, from 2000- 2008, huge resources of the country was used to construct the third hydro-electric dam in the country instead of intensifying the thermal power generation.

He said the power crisis had been experienced under various governments in the country, however, the solutions adopted make the crisis to re-occur hence the government of President Mahama decided to find lasting solutions.

Ms Mavis Ama Frimpong, Deputy Regional Minister said currently the government has initiated a power mix and for the first time in the history of the country, power is being generated from sources including hydroelectric, thermal, wind, solar, the sea , sugarcane waste with some private companies generating power from palm kernels .

She said the government intends to make Ghana the net exporter of power to other countries.

The Deputy Regional Minister assured the youth that, they have a promising future under President Mahama and urged them to work hard for him to win the 2016 elections and opportunities would be opened to them.

The National Youth Organiser of the party, Mr Siidi Abubakad urged the members of TEIN to work hard for the party.

Mr Mark Oliver Kevor, Eastern Regional Secretary of the NDC said, the party had always given opportunity to the youth since the time of former President Jerry Rawlings and assured the members of TEIN that they have a future in the party.

He urged them to be evangelists for the party and to target the first time voters and make the party attractive to them.
