NPP Replies Aseidu Nketia: He Is Ignorant And Has No Credibility

The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has described comments made by the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) about the NPP's petition at the Supreme Court as ignorant.

Johnson Asiedu Nketia has said he erred in perceiving the leadership of the NPP to be astute legal luminaries as he now considers them as a bunch of “blockheads" masquerading as “bookworms”.

His comments came after the NPP filed a suit at the Supreme Court claiming that over 1.3 million votes were stolen for incumbent President, John Mahama in the December 7 Presidential elections.

In an interview with Citi News, the Deputy Communications Director of the NPP, Sammy Awuku stated that Mr. Asiedu Nketia's comments are unfortunate.

“I am really surprised that the NDC considers this a backward step by the NPP. It's born out of ignorance and it also shows clearly that he doesn't appreciate the positions in our constitution. It's born out of ignorance, it's a clear case of ignorance on the part of the NDC General Secretary.”

According to him, it is possible for a President to be sued despite widespread speculations and interpretations of the Constitution, “this is the same Asiedu Nketia who up till now has been against the founder of his own party; a man who changed his lifestyle from a pauper to a star. A Law Lecturer at the University of Ghana has said that anybody who says the President cannot be sued, it's a wrong impression that the person is creating.”

“The Constitution of the Republic of Ghana says that a person whose election is being challenged must be joined in the suit. In this case, the NPP has sued the Electoral Commissioner….that decision of the Electoral Commission; its candidate Mr. John Dramani Mahama so if he cannot see as the Constitution is saying, the person whose election you are challenging the suit will go nowhere,” he explained.

The NPP has petitioned the Supreme Court challenging the validity of the results of the December 7 presidential elections. The party is alleging that over 1.3 million votes were wrongly counted and some in the favour of president Mahama.
