Mrs Lucy Awuni, Upper East Deputy Regional Minister has described the protests by New Patriotic Party (NPP) against the results of the December 7 general election as a mockery of the Peace Declaration Agreement, which the political party leaders signed in Kumasi just before the elections.

In statement issued in Bolgatanga on Thursday, she said immediately after the December 7 polls, the NPP allowed its members to mass up in public places to stage protests against the conduct of the elections.

This, she said gave other countries and the foreign media a disturbing impression that there is uneasy calm in the country and that highly regarded institutions like the Electoral Commission (EC) and the security agencies were shoddy.

She expressed dissatisfaction that journalists who were at the line of duty were attacked.

Mrs Awuni said even innocent market women who were perceived to be sympathisers of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had their share of physical assaults.

She cautioned NDC supporters against reprisal attacks and entreated them to remain calm and to report any threat to the appropriate quarters.

“The December elections shifted the global spotlight on Ghana amid pre-election tension and anxiety; but, thankfully, we, as Africa's torchbearer in democratic governance, did not let the continent down,” she said.

She congratulated NDC supporters and sympathisers on the “sweet” victory clinched in both the Presidential and the Parliamentary elections.
