The two former presidents, former President John Kufuor and Jerry Rawlings have insisted that the conduct of the Electoral Commission before and during the elections should be critically investigated.

According to former President Jerry John Rawlings, although he is happy about President John Mahama's victory, the complains by the NPP must be taken seriously by the EC.

“Government must urge them on to make sure everything is investigated so that the public is told what the situation is or must have been. Whichever way it's going to lead to, Ghanaians will accept it.”

He indicated that similar incidents “were done in our time, we complained without providing evidence and when we even finally won; it happened in 2004, and when we finally won in 2008, we could have investigated some of these things but we did not. Today they are in the same situation on the opposite side now and making this allegation which I think is our duty and our responsibility to investigate.”

Former President Kufuor on his part indicated that the electoral process was flawed right from voting day to the point of declaration.

Speaking to the Chairman of the African Union (AU), Yayi Boni, he said: “The real truth of the situation here, I believe, is with the Electoral Commission. I don't blame the politicians whether of my party or the President's party; I don't blame them. The Electoral Commission of Ghana over the past year or two has behaved as if it's above the constitution itself that created it. It's not so. It has done so many things that need to be looked into.”

The ex-President opined that the EC has played a “very foul game after using the state's money unaccountably. If there is any trouble, it's the Electoral Commission, it's not the politician.”

He called on the EC to be responsible and accountable to the people of Ghana for peace to prevail saying, “if we want peace on the continent, we want to real progress, then institutions like the Electoral Commission; they should become a people's institution; the institution should be accountable. I believe the constitution of Ghana enjoins the Electoral Commissioner to be accountable to the people of Ghana.”
