Sulley Alhassan The remains of Sulley Alhassan who was stabbed to death following the December 28 post-runoff violence at the Agbogbloshie Market, were interred at the Madina Public Cemetery yesterday according to Islamic rites.

The solemn occasion attracted a large turnout of New Patriotic Party (NPP) faithful who accompanied the cortege.

It would be recalled that following the Electoral Commission's declaration last Saturday that Prof John Evans Atta Mills had won the 28th December presidential run-off, a group of persons believed to be operatives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ran amok at the Agbogbloshie Market in Accra, and in the process killed one person and injured several others.

The deceased, Sulley Alhassan, who was an NPP supporter, was allegedly butchered by numerous NDC activists including Afa  Mohammed, Afa Alhassan, Afa Haruna, Mohammed Zabzugu, Tahiru, Adam Toblana and Nassam. The ringleaders were mentioned as Mohammed Ayatu and Rahim.

A source who craved anonymity told DAILY GUIDE that in the heat of the jubilation by NDC agents after the Electoral Commission declaration, NPP supporters were attacked by the jubilating activists.

Their places of abode were attacked and in the process Mohammed Ayatu, Mohammed Zabzugu, Tahiru and Adam Tablana allegedly stabbed the deceased, inflicting multiple wounds on his body.

The remains of the deceased, said to have hailed from Dagbon in the Northern Region, were first deposited at the morgue before the burial yesterday.

In an interview with DAILY GUIDE, Yahya Olu, another victim who sustained multiple wounds on both arms at the Agbogbloshie Market, said he escaped death by a whisker.

He disclosed that on that day, NDC supporters went on rampage destroying structures in which NPP supporters lived.

At the time, the NPP supporters sought refuge at their party office at the Konkomba Market.

Yahya was allegedly attacked when he returned to restore his damaged structure by Mohammed Ayatu and a certain Rahim who were supported by others.

Narrating his story, he said he was rescued by passers-by who took him to the Jamestown Police Station, from where he was referred to the Old Fadama Police Station and then to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

The Agblogbloshie Market, otherwise called Konkomba Market, is a hotbed of politics, fueled by the Dagbon chieftaincy crisis.

Peopled with mostly youth from the Dagbon part of the Northern Region, they are divided into the Andani and Abudu chieftaincy divide. There have been occasional bloody clashes between these youth.
