Fatal scaffolding accident in Amanoni

02.04.2015 LISTEN
By Paul Taylor

In the early hours of the morning of 1st April, 2015, a scaffold has collapsed in Amanoni, killing at least 2 construction workers at a construction site. Some victims are feared to be still trapped in rubble. One of the survivors, Kojo Mansah, 27, said the scaffolding had shaken several times before it "suddenly collapsed." It had stood about 20 meters (65 feet) high. "People were screaming, calling for help from the rubble," he said. "I was lucky to survive."

The scaffolding came down just before 11 a.m. at Amanoni Rural Hospital development site just south of Ablovi on Klaki Street. The area has been blocked off to traffic while police investigate what led to the accident. Jessica Laryea, the site supervisor/contractor, told the media that they wouldn't comment on the case, other than to say that "all safety precautions were taken and this is just an accident. Any legal issues will be determined by the Courts".
