One of the reason why Komenda in the Central region of Ghana is very popular apart from the location of the Komenda College of Education is sugar cane. Komenda Sugar Factory now defunct was so popular that in the Central region, before imported sugar was the sugar of choice, that of Komenda Sugar Factory was everybody favorite.

At Mankessim, there was also a mini Sugar Factory owned by Mr. Allan and his causcasian partner, and their business was called ALLAN FARM. they produced high qualities of Sugar Cane juice and occassionally made sugar for local consumption. Juice from Sugar cane was used to make sugar, mollases and Akpeteshie version locally known as "Mola".

That drink, "MOLA APIO" is very cheap BUT strong. I remember during our sixth form times, when one of our seniors smuggled a gallon of "mola" into our dormitory and all the juniors including me were forced to drink that alcohol; and guess what! we were about 20 young students, we all got drunk and could not attend the Sunday afternoon church service. You want to know what happened to the seniors who did that to us.............?
