The over 50 African presidents and heads of state attending the 9th Session of the African Union summit will today hold the grand debate on the union government idea.

The 'United States of Africa' concept hopes to unite all countries on the continent under one government.

Whilst some of the delegates, believe the process should be gradual, others, like Libyan leader Muamar al-Qadafi, are of the opinion that there is no more time to spare and that action must be taken now.

Gradualist proponents have been quick to advise a need for the strengthening of regional bodies as a foundation for the continental unity.

The Head of the United Nations Refugee Agency, Antonio Gutierrez has expressed hope that the idea will lead to fewer conflicts.

Another major event expected on today is the meeting of the continent's First Ladies to discuss the challenges of HIV/AIDS.

Meanwhile it is still not clear how much access journalists covering today's sessions at the summit will have following yesterday's disappointment.

Only a handful of accredited journalists got access to the hall for the opening session.

Deputy Information Minister, Oboshie Sai Coffie, apologised for the shortcomings and promised a quick resolution, however the journalists were clearly not satisfied.
