A Large enthusiastic crowd lined up some of the principal streets of Kumasi last Monday to cheer the flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, as he drove around town.
Young men and women, the aged and children came out of their houses, stores and shops to hail the NPP flag bearer amid waving of the party's paraphernalia, singing, dancing and tooting of horns.
Coming just a day after the NPP had organised one of the biggest rallies in the history of Ghana, some party activists described the drive as a “top up” and “victory lap” by the NPP flag bearer.
Shouts of “Ye wie”, which literally means “We've finished” and “One touch”, which suggested the NPP will chalk up a first round victory, reverberated all over the streets.
Among the areas the flag bearer's entourage drove through were Asawasi, Manhyia and Kejetia, and almost everywhere, there was long vehicular traffic as drivers and passengers joined the fray.
At Asawasi, which is considered to be the stronghold of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the reception accorded Nana Akufo-Addo was very encouraging as the people came out in their numbers to catch a glimpse of the NPP flag bearer.
At Manhyia and Kejetia, the commercial heartbeat of Kumasi, the shouts and cheers were deafening, especially when Nana Akufo-Addo stood on his open-top vehicle to acknowledge the cheers from the crowd.
Addressing mini rallies at various places, Nana Akufo-Addo asked the people to go out in their numbers on Sunday to vote massively for the NPP to give an endorsement to the good things the party had done.
He told them to disregard anyone who would preach tribal politics, indicating that Ghanaians were one people.
Nana Akufo-Addo said the NDC had nothing to offer the nation and so Ghanaians should reject it at the polls.
The NPP flag bearer undertook a similar tour of Accra yesterday and would take his final campaign to the Eastern Region, with a regional rally at Oda on Wednesday.
